Highgate is a young kennel with a mother and daughter team. It was started by Janice 15 years ago when we were showing rough collies and we wanted to start breeding, so the Highgate affix was registered.
Janice was in the dog world before Marian was born when she had a Border Collie, an Afghan and a sheltie. At that time shelties were just about unobtainable in South Africa. Her first sheltie was obtained from a Karoo sheep farmer but was never able to be registered as the lady who had bred her died soon afterwards and all the papers were lost. It was while we were showing Collies that we met Mauricea and Sheila Baker and asked to book a puppy which we waited about 2 years for. That was Shandy who flew from Jo'burg to Cape Town at 9 weeks old and was the start of the Highgate Shetland Sheepdogs.
We have owned numerous breeds including, Rough Collies, a Border Collie, German Shepherds, French Poodles, a Rottweiler, an Afghan, and at present a Bouvier des Flanders, Bowzer who is big brother to the shelties.
Shelties are our great love. We both enjoy showing our dogs. We have also taken part in obedience and agility and dog jumping and are both obedience trainers and judges. Our shelties come to training school with us on Saturdays where we do some show training and obedience, they interact with all breeds and are well socialized.
To date we have bred three litters of shelties so have not been breeding all that long. Our first litter produced three champions of which we are very proud. Our second litter produced six puppies although only Mr Paddington was shown the others were sold to good pet homes. Our last litter produced Tinkerbell who was the only puppy.
We have six shelties at the moment of which five are champions. Tinkerbell has just turned 18 months and is waiting for the championship shows to gain her final CC.
We are hoping to have a litter from Donna this year and Paddington has been booked for stud for later in the year.
Our aim is to try to breed as close to the standard as possible. All our dogs live in the home with us and are part of the family. We strive to breed healthy puppies with good temperaments, beauty and brains.
We would like to thank all the judges both here and overseas who recognised our dogs' qualities. Also thanks to Maurice and Sheila who got us going by sending us Shandy and Holly.
We would like to say a very special thank you to our dear friend Elaine Tozer whose help, encouragement and advice will always be greatly appreciated.
We hope you enjoy our site please feel free to contact us with your comments.
